Fuchsia Lady Boothby

Fuchsia Books

The vast number of varieties of this extremely popular flowering plant can sometimes seem baffling as is also, to many people, the spelling. Fuschia and fushia are just two of the common wrong spellings; the easy way to get it right is to remember that the flower was named after the botanist Leonhart Fuchs.

Here is a selection of books to guide you, not only on the selection of plants for particular uses but also on fuchsia propagation, care and cultivation. We include links to searches in the catalogues of dealers worldwide for older editions as well as new books.

The pictures below do not show the books as all the same size. Why? Because they actually do vary in size, in roughly these proportions. At the foot of the page you'll see a picture of several different fuchsia flowers against a black background, illustrating the fact that the flowers of different varieties also vary enormously in size. (Note: Illustrated above is Lady Boothby)

Edwin Goulding

FUCHSIAS: The Complete Guide

In my opinion this is the book for the serious amateur. Not only does it deal in depth with the care and cultivation of fuchsia cultivars for bedding, containers, standards, exhibition, etc, but discusses hybridizing and plant genetics in an intelligible manner for the non-professional. He also has a chapter on triphyllas, encliandras, paniculates and other special fuchsias, plus a lengthy chapter on species fuchias. Click here for available copies (note, there are several editions; check the listings carefully if you want the 2002 edition) of this book by Edwin Goulding.

Miep Nijhuis

FUCHSIAS

The book illustrated here, as well as its predecessor, was produced in collaboration with the Dutch Fuchsia Sociaety. "1000 Fuchsias" and "500 More Fuchsias" are most easily described, I think, as a set of photographic catalogues of fuchsia varieties, but they are much more than that. Excellent reference works for the serious collector and grower. Click here for these and other fuchsia writings of Miep Nijhuis.
